Marcus Miller

Marcus Miller has been an influence on me in the way he plays the Bass Guitar.Stanley Clarke, Mark King(Level 42), Howie Morgan(NZ, Cousin), and Stu Hamm are a couple of other Bassist's I listened to growing up, but for me Marcus had it all!

Marcus Miller (born William Henry Marcus Miller Jr., June 14, 1959, Brooklyn, New York) is an American jazz musician, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.
Miller is best known as a bassist, working with trumpeter Miles Davis, singer Luther Vandross, and saxophonist David Sanborn, as well as maintaining a prolific solo career. Miller is classically trained as a clarinetist and also plays keyboards, saxophone and guitar.

Howie Morgan

I'll try not to sound biased, but it's hard when it's family!. In saying that, Howie was raised in New Zealand, and was destined to play guitar, having being named after my father's brother (Uncle) who was a top-notch guitarist in New Zealand by the name of  Howard Morgan.

My father (his grandfather he called Dad) also played guitar, and my cousins Peter Chuck and Howie Morgan had been on the scene in bands while we were growing up, and every other cousin or relation we had played guitar.Guitars were part of growing up in our house, and it's good to hear his sound come through in his music.

Howie Morgan developed his craft in cover bands playing everything from rock to jazz gigs. In 1999-2000 he studied music at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts(WAAPA) and started writing original material. After numerous recording sessions as a guitarist and vocalist in 2003, he released his own EP Soulstice.

In 2004, he travelled to Detroit with his trio (Jarrod Pizzata and Roy Martinez) to record an album and perform showcase gigs, which were all very well received. More recently, Howie supported artists such as Peter Frampton, Daryl Braithwaite, Thirsty Merc, The Whitlams, Taxi ride and toured up and down the state a many times.

Oct 2005 saw the launch of the EP She told me, which was mixed by producer/engineer Adrian Hall (Robbie Williams, Black eyed peas and Live 8) in London's Metropolis studio. The title track for the EP was picked up on rotation on 96fm.

A follow-up full-length album Songs from the lounge, which was distributed nationally, was released in 2007. In a style that can be described as a cross between roots, soul, pop and rock, and with a strong emphasis on song-writing, Howie continues to impress audiences with a dynamic and musically rich performance.

Songs From The Lounge
"Summertime" from Songs From The Lounge

The Howie Morgan Project

The Howie Morgan Project is Dane Alderson (bass), Andrew Fisenden (drums) and Howie Morgan (guitars/vocals). These three exceptional musicians have been working together for about two years, mainly in the pub scene, playing soul/blues/rock tunes.

They also work individually as session players for other artists. Dane and Andy are very accomplished jazz musicians and regulary work with James Morrision and have a jazz fusion band called Void.

Howie grew up listening to B.B King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Cray, Sonny Terry & Browinie Mcgee, Ray Charles, Robben Ford and cite these as his main influences.

Howie has been through many musical phases - folk, rock, jazz, soul - but always finds himself back to the blues, which is where all came from.

He launched his album Songs from the Lounge in early 2007. It's a mix of singer/songwriter tunes that received airplay on 96fm and has national distribution.

Howie has also supported Peter Frampton, Ian Moss,Daryl Braithwaite and support for Simply Red in Feb 2009. The new album was launched in early 2009.

Mark King

Mark King (born 20 October 1958, Cowes, Isle of Wight) is an English musician. He is most famous for being the lead singer and bassist of the band, Level 42. In the early 1980s King popularized the 1970s-era slap and pop style for playing the bass guitar by incorporating it into pop music.

I grew up listening to Level 42 in my ska/funk/punk/new wave era. He was a white black man , who lay down thunder-strikes on his bass, and is just a funky technician. With a unique vocal to go with his Bass, and as lead singer of Level 42, he put the slap-bass into pop music and made it good.

Dane Alderson.

Dane hails from Perth, Western Australia and is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with in the jazz world. Dane is innovative and displays virtuosic control of his instrument. Dane has played for top jazz artists like James Morrison as well as pop and R&B artists around Australia.
Prepare to be blown away by one of Australia's best kept secrets!

Deep Street Soul - Deep Street Soul (2009)

| 2CD | MP3 | CBR 192 (kbps) | 33:47 min | 46 MB

Deep Street Soul are funk DJ & drummer Agostino ‘Sol Loco’ Soldati, bass player & soul aficionado Papa ‘J’ Hunter, Cropper lovin’ Matt Green and Queen of the Hammond Ms. Monique ‘Mon Cherie’ Boggia. Getting together in early 06’ they formed with the simple aim of recapturing some old skool southern flavors they’d DJ'd over the previous decade. Inspired by the breakout of nufunk throughout Europe & the States (not forgetting Osaka Monaurail and Australia’s own - The Bamboos) they hit the clubs. Starting with an initial batch of Booker T & Meter’s covers, these quickly morphed into their own set of raw break filled funk & soul.
Teaming with local Melbourne soul/funk label Jaycees in early 07’, they released their first 45’ getdownHQ/deepstreet strut. The 45’ quickly sold out and saw rotation on stations & mixes worldwide. As a result, a new 45’ loose caboose/nasty was recorded for Jaycee’s early 08’ (which also sold out) and a special 3 track digital release was cut for Blair Stafford's Straightup Recordings label.

After hearing these tracks, Freestyle Records (UK) boss Adrian Gibson signed the band to his label. The vinyl re-release of Chilli Fried will drop on the 5th Oct 09 containing tracks from previous releases, the 1st single Kick out the Jams on the 12th Oct 09. The first LP is due for release on 16th Nov 09 - Recorded in late 2008 this album is funk of the down’n’dirty variety.

The Art of War (Audio-Book)

The Art of War is a Chinese military treatise written during the 6th century BC by Sun Tzu. Composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare, it has long been praised as the definitive work on military strategies and tactics of its time.

This is one of the oldest and most famous studies of strategy and has had a huge influence on both military planning and beyond.  also been applied, with much success, to business and managerial strategies.

I have read the book, but now you can just push play and enjoy this Audiobook.

Baby Gone Bye Bye - Richard Bennett (NZ) (Dj2Mekz mix1)

I first met Ritchie while tutoring  in Whangarei, NZ. Quite often I would hear him singing almost everyday all over the campus.
While teaching during the day, and club/dj'ing  at night then, our affiliation came about through music.
He entered a talent competition sponsored by Mai -FM (NZ Radio Station), and came to me that morning in my classroom, to ask if I could record a quick demo to give to them. Talk about a rush job.

Long story short, we laid down some tracks in the classroom with my students present, mixed it down, burnt it off, then he went to the competition and won! He got a recording contract with MAI FM, and got to make a video! Shot out to you  Ritchie,Dutch and whanau!
Last time we talked you were heading down Hamilton. Good Luck bro, Hope to catch up soon!
Give a shotout to Katchafire from Me Muzz and Lloydy (Filmcrew@Ngapuhi Festival 2010) if you catch up with them.

Milk and Honey (I think we can make it) - Toots & The Maytals (Dj2Mekz Rework)
Originally called simply the Maytals and along with other key figures in reggae music, this musical group soon became one of the best known ska, reggae vocal groups out of Jamaica.
Formed in the early 1960s when ska was hot, the band had a reputation for a seldom-rivaled passion for their music.  Their close-harmony gospel singing ensured success, overshadowing other up-and-coming vocal group, The Wailers.

I've always loved this song, and for years I was looking for a song called 'I think we can make it', only to find out later it's really called Milk and honey. Mixed with Shaggy's song Angel. We watched a clip of Toots at a mates house in concert, and he still pumps it out!

Heres  a trick to check your Anti-virus is working properly

Open notepad (or new text document)Copy this code into the text file

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

then save it (rename) with the name fakevirus.exe If this file gets deleted immediately, that means your anti-virus is working and updated.
If the folder is still visible, you may have to check your virus program settings, and update your virus program, or if you are using a FREE Anti Virus maybe think about buying full Software.

I know freeware programs aren't as comprehensive as full version Software, and have limitations.
Trial version software is a little better, meaning you get the full functionality of the program, but only for a limited time.

Personally, I like an Anti Virus to have a built-in firewall as well as a Spyware/Malware cleaner. Probably asking alot, but I expect to be safe online. As well, I don't think the windows firewall is that great!
I have found a pretty good Anti-Virus/Firewall/Spyware product lately, and it comes with a 2 month trial.
It's called Bullguard Internet Security

Here's a tip - don't open emails from people you don't know. Safe surfing !

Homies VS Helluva - Lighter Shade of Brown (Dj2Mekz BacktoBack)
Their debut album, 1990's "Brown and Proud," gave the group their only Top 40 single in the U.S. with "On A Sunday Afternoon," which contained samples from The Young Rascals' 1967 hit "Groovin' ", Tommy James and the Shondells' 1969 hit "Crystal Blue Persuasion". The song also went to #1 for 2 weeks in New Zealand.

It was a sunday i think when I was kickin back to Helluva, and decided to do a backtoback with On A Sunday Afternoon
I don't know a great deal about Lighter Shade of Brown, so I went to trusty wikipedia for more information.

Roger Troutman (November 29, 1951 – April 25, 1999) was the lead singer of the band Zapp who helped spearhead the Funk movement and heavily influenced West Coast hip hop due to the scene's heavy sampling of his music over the years. Troutman was well known for his use of the talkbox, a device that is connected to an instrument (frequently a keyboard) to create different vocal effects.

As both lead singer of Zapp and in his subsequent solo releases, he scored a bevy of funk and R&B hits throughout the 1980s. In his later years, he was mostly known for singing the chorus to the hip-hop classic, "California Love", with the late 2Pac Shakur.

I was brought up on these sounds! Roger Troutman and Zapp came on the scene and Rocked the Party!
May he rest in peace, Roger and Zapp gave us some mean music. Check my links to Roger Troutman on Wikipedia to find out more about this artist.

Forgive them Father - Fugees (Dj2Mekz Rework)

Lauryn Noel Hill is an American recording artist, musician, producer and actress.
Early in her career, she established her reputation in the hip-hop world as a member of the Fugees. In 1998, she launched her solo career with the release of the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The recording earned Hill five Grammy Awards, including the coveted Album of the Year and Best New Artist.

I had this lazy beat hanging around for awhile, and I wanted to use it on something, so I used it on this track.
I love Lauren Hill's voice (and body), and I used to have problems mixing this in, so I added an intro, and can count it in properly now!

Emotion - Destiny's Child (Dj2Mekz Rework)

Destiny's Child (also known as DC or DC3) was an American R&B girl group comprising lead singer Beyoncé Knowles alongside Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. Formed in 1997 in Houston, Texas, Destiny's Child members began their musical endeavors in their pre-teens under the name Girls' Tyme, comprising Knowles, Rowland, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett.
After years of performing underground, they signed to Columbia Records and changed their name.

Destiny's Child was launched into mainstream recognition following the release of their best-selling second album, The Writing's on the Wall, which contained the number-one singles "Bills, Bills, Bills" and "Say My Name".
.
Just a str8 clean mix, little bit of effects, but basically a one take recording. She's married now, so for most of us, this is as close as we get to Beyonce!

The Art of Remix - Thoughts on Mixing

Hearing the work put into re-inventing the way a song can sound, can be an inspiration for some, in the way they approach their own mixes.A good remix for me, should incorporate at least some of the following;

A Good song
Trying not to state the obvious here, but I mean why pick a dull song to remix?
On the other hand it might make sense to some, to take a crap song and make it better, but realistically it should be a song that has classic appeal to all listeners. Some older remixes I have done, people have really dug, so it just shows how important song choice can be.

I had a moment of clarity one day scrolling through my collection, when I came across my Kate Bush folder.
I sort of knew who she was, but wasn't too familiar with all her music. I played back the track Wuthering heights, and decided to remix it. Believe me, Im not a fan of hers, or her music.

Within 5 Minutes I had a beat locked in, the tempo's set, then mixed and recorded it in one take. I added a Crump-Style Beat( 808style), did a clean (No Talk 8 Bar) Intro, added 1 voice sample, and added no effects (delay, flange, etc). I still don't know why my friends think its a cool mix, when I know I didn't do much to the track, and picked a pretty obscure song!

But that's the thing, you can give a song a new lease of life by remixing it. I love to try and bring out a feeling from a remix.

A good sounding board for song choices are your family and friends! A good Dj will know all the singalong songs (I call them), but if you can drop a remix of a well known song, half the time people are gonna dig it because they already know it.
Obscure songs can be a bit touch and go, but if you can pull it off, it sounds mean! I find that Dj's who can make a song appeal to all genres, are the ones who get all the gigs.

Good use of Effects/Technique
A normal remix is made up of 16Bars of Beats, then 16Bar Intro, Then the main song.
When I get hold of a new remix or album, I can normally tell if the remix and/or remixers are any good after the first 32 Bars, by listening to the techniques and tricks they use on the intro.
These include samples, sound effects, loops, effects (delay, E.Q, etc), beats, and more importantly sound quality. If a Dj can scratch well, he will also use that technique.

In my time  Dj'ing, I've made some costly mistakes mixing. Staying awake most the night with headphones on (so you don't wake the house) trying to finish, edit and mixdown a track, only to find out its distorted, or there's a volume drop, because I never monitored the playback or checked the levels. Take the time to be fussy and precise, and LOUD if you have to.
And with live mixing, you could end up with a muddy mix, again by not employing a proper recording Technique/Formula.
The way to good Technique is through excellent Knowledge of your Gear (or Software), knowing its capabilities, and knowing how to dial in a nice sound.A good amp and P.A help too! Then practice, practice, practice.

Also, work on your 'DJ VOICE', which I call the voice you use when you're on the Mic. Yes, there's even technique for that! Good gear helps. I'd rather have 1 good mic than 3 budget ones.

Weekend Thing - Koffee Brown (Dj2Mekz Rework)

Koffee Brown were a neo-soul duo consisting of male singer Fonz and female singer Vee. They were discovered by producer Kay Gee and were signed to Arista Records. They are best known for their 2001 song "After Party".(Wikipedia.org)

I remember when a girl came up to me at a gig and asked if I would play track 7 on her cd. This was the song, and I didn't have it in my crate or PC, but it did help me to have a good night.
I soon found out who Koffee Brown was, and still enjoy their sounds.
Not much to say , a drum track, sample, scratch sample, and a bit of time. Clean Intro.

Where you are - Rashaan Patterson (Dj2Mekz Rework)

Here is a song I thought needed a bit of a beat put behind it to bring the song out. I haven't really done any Intro's on these mixes, but its good to hear a clean Mix every now and then.

My Cherie Amour - Tony Thompson (Dj2Mekz Rework)

This is an old classic brought back by a man called Tony Thompson.Of course originally sung by the Master Blaster himself, Stevie Wonder.
I'm not sure who Tony Thompson is, but he can sing man! The only man I knew of this name was a drummer for the band 'Chic' (Remember 'Good Times'), but he died November 12, 2003.
